Sweet T and the Oakland Running festival

Oakland had their inaugural marathon last weekend. Bill and I went out to support Miss T and enjoyed some sunshine and Oakland vibe at the same time. Everyone was so enthused!
Watching people cross the finish line was really amazing. I mean, some runners were definitely fit, and yes this was a challenge, but there were others who you know were really struggling at the end. They hobbled, they walked, they paused to stretch, but then kept going --all while a crowd along Broadway cheered them on. Neat.

And what? What you say? Here's a wee video of our own Sweet about 100 feet pre-finish line. YEEEEEEEEEEEEEAH!

Covert Ops

This morning, immediately following a computer funeral march at the Apple Store, I came into my office to a pretty terrarium in a vase on my desk. I am fascinated with terrariums --- there were mosses, rocks, ferns, and even a wee bit of shell. Although it had a pretty purple ribbon, there was no card, no note. Hmmm.

I have been musing all day. Initially, I assumed it was my boss --- we had a super hectic week and I thought this was a thank you. Nope. Then I was trying to remember who I had discussed terrariums with... but to be honest, this seemed like an intimate gift and I was starting to get a tad weirded out at coworker possibilities.

Asking asking, getting quirked eyebrows ("Did you put a terrarium on my desk" IS a pretty strange question), I stared at the pretty vegetation and purple ribbon....and it suddenly occurred to me that this was something my lovely friend Anna would do. Indeed! It was she! And what is this? AMY was in on it? Amy sitting behind me all day, perplexed Amy!?!?!

Ha. and yay! Lucky am I to have two such lovely friends to go out of their way to do something nice for me. Even if they are sneaky. :)

Flashback Friday: love at first sight.

Somewhere around twelve years ago, Crosby and I were sitting in AP History contemplating Quakers and in walks Anna---new at Amador from Ithaca, New York. She walked in and an awesome vibe came with her: super intelligent, unconsciously cool and big curly poofy hair. Crosby and I were like Yes. We are going to be friends with her.

This picture was taken approximately three days later, as part of a photo assignment I had for class where I made everyone dress up gothy and we took pictures in black silky dresses. Friends then, friends now, and this first time hangout picture makes me very happy.

These are the pictures you always wanted someone to take.

Two Weeks ago:A bunch of folks loaded into a rather large van and went to see Motley Crue. Dressed for the occasion, we drank $12 coronas and watches with quirked eyebrows while Tommy Lee ran around with his "titty cam." The show was entertaining (mostly), the music was pretty terrible (entirely), and most strong was the awareness that things that seem awesome and carefree to do when you are 25, look a tad sad when you are late 40s. And wearing your own bands teeshirt.

One Week ago:Bill and I went up to the Sierras, to the cabin and Lake Alpine. We caught a Steely Dan concert at the Ironstone Winery in Murphys and watched middle-agers get reprimanded because their lawn chairs were too high. It was pretty rad.

This Last Weekend:I flew to San Diego to spend time with my Crosby. Fun fun undiluted girl time, we dancy danced, laid on the beach, shopped till we actually almost dropped, and ate the most fantastic breakfast: strawberries and ricotta on cranberry-orange-walnut toast, topped with drizzled honey. Color me happy.

Old cd in the car stereo on the way to work, and a Tori song comes on, one that I haven't heard in a long long time, but marvel that I remember every inflection, intonation, gutteral slide. If I were to make a video of this song, it would be a montage of images....driving at lunch in high school in a maroon volvo with tan interior, sunny and Crosby's hair trying to sneak out the sunroof...Mel singing purposefully off-key because she suspects she can't hit the notes anyway...picking out the piano portions on the upright in the fancy living room (all white) while I wait for someone, anyone, to pick me up at my house...

Songs are funny that way, all flashback and reminiscent-ish. Made me want to turn around my car, go home, and pick out the song all over again, not waiting.

But I have a report to write.

Bettina! Bettina! (Galway, Ireland, 2000)

There were Italians in our housing that couldn't believe her name was "little betty" and always insisted on saying it twice. Bettina! Bettina! Their enthusiasm was contagious and only slightly indicative of the energy and vivacity of this woman who's small stature could barely contain her. In Dublin, we ran around, giving bananas to street folk and walking way too far in a given day. In Davis, we hid from stuffy rooms and I gave her mugs. In San Francisco, we had our Tarot cards read in the early morning hours and a woman told her to stop wearing dark brown and black.

Now, she lives in Canada. Now, she is finishing her PhD in Native American Studies. And, now, Bettina is having a baby....a wee baby boy!

Bettina! Bettina! (love!love!)

Renew or Run: Carousel

Last night was Carousel at Catalyst Cocktails, a bar in a pretty dodgey part of the city (it's across the street from the sf jail...which is actually a pretty cool building that doesn't look like a jail at all). Advertised as an event for those "too old for Popscene, but too young for Depends," Carousel was a Lloyd promoted event, which will likely be repeated, featuring local DJs and a good crowd of peeps.

Flashback Friday: Grad night

December 14th-ish, 1997. In our high school gym, games, a bouncy house, a dj yadda yadda...all set up to celebrate the class of 1997. I bought my fun hat at Raley's with Anna an hour before the evenings festivities. My dad chaperoned (he worked the gate by the parking lot) and as Anna, Af, and I walked up, Af remembered he had a bottle of alcohol in his backpack. Purely by accident. I remember in his panic, he totally told my dad abruptly about the illegal cargo. My dad just sighed with a wee chuckle, shaking his head...like hell would his daughter be drinking it. They walked and put it in my Dad's truck. We all drank soda.

There are some other pics from this evening, groups of us posing with wooden clowns, but they aren't on my computer, and I put my broken scanner on the street yesterday.

Also, that night, I remember my poor tiny heart breaking because of a stupid boy. And then I remember jumping in the bouncing house, savagely, giggling, and flailing my arms to the tune of LoveShack.

Tequila Night

Held at Steve and Jeremy's house this year, my tequila night experience was mellow, full of toasts and occasional shots and parents and kids and announcements of buns in the oven. Apparently, I retained this PG vision of the evening because I left just after 11. Debauchery ensued. Stitches should have happened, but didn't. The carpet will never be the same. And rumor has it, Wood broke a bone. Ahwell.

I finished your lime vodka

Party at Holly's near Divis on Saturday night. These pictures were pilfered off her flickr site---they were all taken by Sam with Holly's camera and a detached flash. Good times, late night, early morning, woot.Holly and Bridget. dual fashionistas.
Miss Erin. She's so pretty. I'm so glad. (no. that will not get old. ever.)I should dedicate a posting to my recent obsession with hand gestures in photos. It's beginning to get ridiculous.
Bill lovingly looking at me, telling a joke that has me giggling. Or teasing me as I try to hide a zit. Either, really.

Here Here!

(wish I'd had a 2.5 f-stop, sigh.)
Rad show. Christian and the rest of the band were fantastic, were climactic, and were smooth. Crowd was definitely into it, people bopping and nodding and toe-tapping. So into it, I even forgot about the photo booth for a bit.

But then I remembered....
