Almost corn thieves; the ears weren't quite ready. The more mature corn is at the bottom of the plant.
This guy was trying to deter us from the blackberries. We were not swayed. 
(if you look closely, there is dirt on my chin.)went to work. road bikes. looked for plants. found one, on a levee amidst star thistle. oooh, here it is. it's rare:
heartscale (Atriplex cordulata).
